GGL: Mexico Mission Trip

Posted: Updated:

For those in their later years there are many ways to stay active and make a contribution to the world. For some, one way is to go on a mission trip with their church or some other group.

This mission trip, sponsored by Emmanuel Baptist Church of Shreveport was to the Mexican Indian Training Center located at Cordoba , Mexico.

Most of the students at M.I.T.C. come from southern Mexico. The school, helps these young men and women from these areas, prepare in depth for a gospel ministry.

Those on the mission trip do whatever is needed - ranging from sewing, doing construction, to working at one of the dental clinics. They don't do this only at the school but also in outlying villages.

For 71 year old Carol Chatwin, a retired nurse, this year marks her 7th mission trip.

"I think an inner calling...You come down here. You see the need. You meet the people. They are so responsive, so humble," Chatwin said,  "and while I'm going home I think, I want to come back. I need to come back."

For 75 year old, Charles Shirley, a retired air conditioning contractor, 2014 was the fourth time to make the mission trip to M.I.T.C.

"I guess it's a more of a blessing to help people who can't help themselves and that's usually the case down here. We just don't realize how blessed we are to live in America," he said.

Those on the mission trip quickly learn that their efforts not only helps others but gives them personal satisfaction.

"Personally, it's making me humble," Shirley says, "It's making me see things I didn't understand before. And it's helping me understand the true definition I read in the Bible of joy."

Yes, there's no question about it.

Helping others can bring joy and plays an important role in - living the good life.
