The Polar Vortex or the cold pool of air at the top and the bottom of the world have been around for ever.  Lately, there has been a lot of talk about the vortex at the north pole concerning our harsh winter.

Believe it or not, due to a really warm Fall around North America especially near the Arctic Circle, the Polar Vortex weakened, but made the US abnormally cold this winter.  It's believed that the record minimum amount of snow pack and sea ice weakened the vortex so much that the polar jet slowed up, unwound and dropped all the way down into the Gulf of Mexico over the past two months.  Thus, we've seen many more arctic outbreaks this year than in the last several.

Even though these arctic fronts are keeping us bitterly cold for several days at a time, they are not quite as cold as they could be due again to less of an ice and snow pack around the arctic.
