Byrd flipping; potential move back to 5A

Thanks to a rule change at the 2014 LHSAA Convention, C. E. Byrd could be heading back to the non-select bracket of the high school football playoffs.  Byrd was one of only two public school to be classified as "select" last season because more than 25% of their football roster came from outside of their school's attendance zone.  With the new rule, that 25% is now expanded to the school's Parish, making Byrd eligible to return to the public school bracket.  

Despite the news, Head Coach Mike Suggs says it will not change his opinion on the heavily debated playoff split, which was voted to continue for the 2014 season in every classification last week.  Byrd Principal Jared Badgley shared the same opinion saying he's not sure if the split is what's best for the schools or players.

Byrd's alleged move to the non-select bracket also eliminates a chance of a playoff rematch with Archbishop Rummel, the team that defeated Byrd in the Division I state championship game in December.  It also raises concern about the Division I bracket itself, that only had 10 teams last season.
