Barksdale Makes Dying Teen's Wish Come True

Posted: Updated:
BOSSIER CITY, La -

Barksdale Air Force Base made a dream for a young Alexandria man come true.

Sam Guimaraes is 17 years old and is terminally ill.

He is battling a very aggressive type of chemo-resistant cancer.

Sam always dreamed of joining the army; however, when he lost his leg to cancer, he also lost his eligibility.

Tuesday, he got to experience his dream by being a "Pilot for the Day."

He, among other things, experienced a simulator and toured a B52.

"It means a lot to me to get to come here today and look at all of the stuff," said Sam.

"These last couple years for him have been very isolated with treatments and stuff where he's not been able to do anything," said his father Scott Guimaraes. "So, it's been real nice to see him smile for a change."

Sam and his parents say they can't thank Barksdale enough.

Lieutenant Colonel Chad Bigelow says every organization on base went above and beyond to make this a special day.
