Funding low for United Way

Posted: Updated:
Texarkana, Texas -

The United Way of Greater Texarkana is falling critically short on funding this year.
While contributions are down, the need for donations are still great.
There are about 44 programs supported by the organization.
More than 95,000 people in the Texarkana area were impacted by United Way programs last year.

Director Mary Wormington says just to maintain the level of giving, they need about $200,000.

"Right now, compared to last year, it's way behind," said Wormington.

The organization has branched out with new fundraisers including Texarkana's first Live United Division II Bowl game.

"Unfortunately because of the weather, it wasn't as successful as we wanted it to be," explained Wormington. "The results are still not in."

While it's an important fundraiser, the majority of money donated to the united way comes from 12 contributors.

One major company closed this year and will not be donating.

"We're going to be down $53,000 just on that one contribution," said Pamela White, United Way Community Impact Chair.

White says they'll be mailing out donation cards.

Their goal is get 500 people to donate $100 each.

She says they're also asking more small businesses to make a tax deductible donation.

"We don't want to reduce the number of people that are getting service through these programs. We want to at least keep it the same as it was last year or if not more," said White.

The fundraising results will be counted in March, but the campaign is an ongoing effort.
