There's local help for minority owned businesses

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La -

As our economy tries to rebound, it's more important than ever to see to it that small businesses thrive.

Some say, it's twice as hard for their small minority owned businesses to succeed.

Rodney White manages his family's business called, White's Printing and Graphic Design. White said, they've been around since the 1950's but sometimes just getting the opportunity to do more work isn't easy. "It is a challenge being a small minority company getting in the door with corporate accounts. Unfortunately, it's not so much of what you know, but who you know is a big factor."

"We know that there is a void, a need and we want to help fill it." David Aubrey with the minority suppliers institute says they and a few other organizations are here to help. Leon Wheeler has a CPA firm in Shreveport. He says he's relied on the Shreveport Bossier African American Chamber of Commerce to get out into the community. "They have workshops and seminars, all types of functions. They assist you with getting employees and contracts." Wheeler says it's important to have organizations around to assist small minority businesses because it gives them a leg up and brings them all together for more opportunities. "Two people pushing a car up the street is better than one. So that group effort can propel you further than if you were by yourself."

If you have a small business and are looking for a little help, there are a couple of resources in our area.

They are the Minority Suppliers Institute, Shreveport Bossier African American Chamber of Commerce, SUSLA's Business Development Center and the Small Business Development Center.
