Deadly house fire claims the life of DeSoto Parish man

Posted: Updated:
MANSFIELD, La. (KTBS) -

State Fire Marshal investigators are investigating a third deadly fire in as many days in north Louisiana.

Mansfield firefighters responded to a home located at 5097 La. Hwy 84 just after noon Saturday.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the single family home venting heavy smoke and flames.

Two of the residents were outside the home and a third resident had not escaped the fire.

After the fire was brought under control, firefighters located the body of 52-year-old Willie Wesley Walton in a living area of the home very near the kitchen.

Investigators learned a passing motorist attempted a rescue before their arrival, but had been unsuccessful.

Walton's daughter and a resident of the home, who was in her bedroom when fire broke out, reported hearing a popping sound and her father yelling out.

She immediately ran in the direction of her father's voice, but was faced with flames and heavy smoke coming from the kitchen area of the home.

She was able to escape through the front door of the residence and made an attempt to re-enter the home through a side door in order to assist her father.

She was wasn't able to re-enter due to the rapidly evolving fire which completely destroyed the two-bedroom home.

Investigators have determined that the fire originated on the gas cooktop within the kitchen.

Investigators believe Walton was attempting to cook something in a skillet when the fire erupted.

There were no working smoke alarms in the home at the time of the fire.
