NAACP's 105th celebration, young people encouraged to join

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTBS) -

Part of Sunday services at Peaceful Rest Baptist Church was dedicated to the National Association for the Advancement of  Colored People. The NAACP turns 105 this week.  During this afternoon's Founders Day celebrations, young people took the spotlight.

"We all just have to come together as one," Taliyah Benton, a Huntington High junior, said. "Everyone is so separated."

That's part of Benton's thoughts on fixing problems within African American communities. She shared more during a speech at the day's services. Sharing and thinking about solutions is just what the NAACP wants young people to do.

"I think the solutions to our problems rest with our young folks," Lloyd Thompson, the local branch's president, said.

More young people, Thompson says, need to join the NAACP to secure and lead the organization and minorities into the future. Thompson says this newer generation's open-mindedness better equips them for the job.

"Our young folks are more tolerant than some of us," Thompson said. "You know, at 49-years-old, I found my tolerance rates aren't as tolerant as theirs."

Thompson says before they can lead, young people need to be taught about what the NAACP has done for them.

"We gotta let our young folks take the torch and continue to run by understanding that: the jobs that they get, the colleges they go to, the opportunities that they enjoy, somebody paid for those opportunities," he said.

Benton is well on the way to becoming a leader. She's recently joined the NAACP and encourages more youth to join her.

"The youth, we should all be in an activity such as the NAACP," Benton said. "They teach us, they build us, as youth."

Nationally, the NAACP will celebrate its 105th birthday on Tuesday. Thompson says the Shreveport NAACP is the oldest in Louisiana at 100 years old.
