Truck drivers, utility crews prepare for winter storm

MINDEN, La. -

Georgia Gov. Nathan deal asked all motorists Monday- especially tractor trailers- to stay off roads that make up the perimeter around Atlanta.

Richard Mumme and his wife were at a Bossier Parish gas station when they heard about the announcement. The two are hauling cargo from Wichita Falls, Tx. to Savannah, Ga. Atlanta is in their path but they already planned to avoid it.

With 32 years big-rig driving between them, the Mummes know they will occasionally cross paths with winter weather.

"We got stuck in Arkansas the other day and sat for seven and a half hours in traffic in Arkansas," Richard Mumme said of the traffic outside Texarkana. "That just part of the job though."

Another group forced often forced onto dangerous roads are power line crews. SWEPCO has requested additional help.

"Any time you see freezing rain in the forecast... then you're going to want to get as many crews as you can in here," said SWEPCO's Scott McCloud. "Right now SWEPCO is requesting a hundred extra line crews to be available to work in our territory.

For motorists who must brave the conditions for work- whether they be long haul truckers, utility repair crews or pizza delivery drivers- there's only so much they can do proactively to stay safe. In the end, it's Mother Nature's decision where she'll strike.

"Most of us stay tuned to the Weather Channel and go into the truck stops [to] watch the screens. We try to stay in front of the storm".

The Texas Department of Transportation offers the following tips for morning commuters:

  • Reduce speed
  • Increase following distance
  • Use extra caution on bridges, ramps and overpasses
  • Stay back at least 200 feet when following vehicles treating or clearing roadways
  • If you begin to skid, ease off the gas or break and steer into the direction of the slide
  • Avoid unnecessary travel
