City of Shreveport closed Tuesday because of slippery forecast

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTBS) -

The City of Shreveport will be closed on Tuesday, February 11, due to forecasts calling for cold, icy roadways throughout the region.

Mayor Cedric Glover made the decision this afternoon following updated reports from the National Weather Service that show a second wave of precipitation passing through the area by midday Tuesday, making it likely that ice will accumulate on bridges and overpasses. Caddo Parish schools also will be closed on Tuesday.

The closure will not affect public safety operations, as fire and police personnel will continue to be on duty as emergencies arise. City crews also will be prepared to sand icy roads if necessary.

``The safety of our city employees and their families is paramount and I think we've all learned how hazardous it can be if you fail to plan ahead and heed the obvious warnings,'' Mayor Glover said. ``This allows our workers to be off the roads and home with their families.''

Trash collection will be delayed by a day but is expected to be back on schedule by Thursday if the weather permits.

The 24-hour dispatch number (673-7600) for the Water Department will be manned along with customer service (673-5510). Field Operations crews also will be on call for emergencies.

Shreveport Regional Airport will remain open for business but travelers are encouraged to check with their airlines for any updates on arrivals and departures.

The regular city council meeting is still scheduled for 3 p.m. Tuesday but Council Chairman Joe Shyne said a final decision to postpone or proceed as planned would be made by noon.

``I'll get together with Art (Thompson) and council staff at noon tomorrow and then decide whether to go ahead with the meeting or postpone to 1 p.m. Thursday,'' Shyne said.

With a rise in online classes, many educational institutions are asking the question, how can they maintain academic integrity in the digital age. More and more students are getting educated through online sources, to match courses to their busy schedules, avoid long commutes or to save money.
