Tech looking to bring C-USA tourney to Shreveport-Bossier

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La -

Louisiana Tech is making a move to host the 2015 Conference USA basketball tournament.  With all the changing dynamics in the conference, no site has been selected yet, but Athletics Director Tommy McClelland came to Shreveport on Tuesday and met informally with reporters to discuss the subject.

McClelland says Ruston does not have enough facilities or hotel rooms to host an event like that, but the Shreveport-Bossier area does.  McClelland says Louisiana tech is gathering information in order to submit a bid to host the men's and women's basketball tournaments simultaneously in 2015.  McClelland says the main site would be the Century Link Center and, at the moment, the necessary dates are available.

Planning and research is in such initial stages that McClelland says possible secondary sites have not yet been worked out, but the Shreveport-Bossier area has several possibilities.  The tournament requires a secondary site to host early round women's games before all semi finals and finals get played at the main site, which would be the Century Link Center.  One potential secondary site would be the Hirsch Coliseum, but discussion about details, including dates, have not yet happened.

McClelland says Tech's commitment to the Shreveport-Bossier area makes it a great fit and an event of that kind would be great for the community.  McClelland points to this year's tournament being in El Paso, with the men's championship game being televised on CBS as being a real coup to that area.  He envisions the same for Shreveport-Bossier if Tech can put together a winning bid.

There is a sense of urgency since the league would probably like to be able to have a site selected for next year by the time it plays this year's tournament in El Paso March 11-15.
