Texas educators awarded grants

Posted: Updated:
WASKOM, Tx. (KTBS) -

A foundation is awarding nearly $15,000  to local teachers for their hard work and dedication in the classroom. It's called the Waskom ISD Education Foundation and it's the first of it's kind at the district.

Students at Waskom High School know her as Big Mama.  She's a teacher with a big heart for her students. On Tuesday, the school's marching band, cheerleaders and Board of Directors held a pep rally to award her a big check.

Oh I'm very happy! I feel happy in my heart! This helps my program keep moving forward into the future," said Big Mama."

A Culinary Arts Teacher, "Big Mama," is one four grant winners, and one of two Waskom High School teachers,  who are now able to purchase items for their classrooms.
And it's all thanks to the newly organized education foundation.

"The equipment, the supplies, the things that we are going to be able to purchase, they're really above and beyond what our normal and corporation budget would fund," said Superintendent  Jimmy Cox.

While some teachers may buy I-Pads, "Big Mama' will buy a new oven to practice recipes she and her students learned on a trip to Disney World.

"We are buying ovens or water immersable food cookery which is what we learned at Disney World," said "Big Mama."

And that's something her Principal, Andy Chilcoat, says he's looking forward to.

"I'm really looking forward to the food that I'm going to get from those ovens," said Chilcoat.

The foundation is now transitioning into another phase of giving. To donate to or join the foundation, contact Waskom ISD office.
