Detective turns quilting hobby into small business

Posted: Updated:
TEXARKANA, Ark. -

A veteran officer hoping to find a release from some of the negatives in the world, has turned to quilting.

The Texarkana, Arkansas Crime Scene Detective is now hoping to expand her small sewing business and help others.

Det. Shawna Yonts has been with the Texarkana, Arkansas Police Department for more than a decade.

In that time, she's spent countless hours processing crime scenes.

Even off the clock, Yonts says it's difficult to get work off her mind.

So, at the urging of her aunt, Yonts tried her hand at quilting.

"I started sewing and 8 hours later I finished it," said Yonts.

After that first quilt in 2002, Yonts says she was hooked.

She made numerous quilts for family and friends, but it was raising money for a trip to the United Kingdom in 2010 that inspired her to turn the hobby into a business.

She collected about $1,800 making quilted crayon bags.

"Even when I'm on call, I can start sewing and I'm thinking about how to put that pattern together, and not what happened at work that day," said Yonts.

In hopes of expanding her business called Arresting Designs, Yonts entered an online Fed-Ex contest with more than 2,000 other small businesses.

The grand prize is $25,000.

Yonts wants to not only be able to expand her business, but also donate more items to Child Protective Services, Angel Quilts and other local charity fundraising events.

Voting will last until February 23rd and Yonts plans to give away a quilt to one of her voters at the end of the voting period.

To be entered into the drawing for the quilt, you need to post on the page each day that you voted.
