Power outages plague Shreveport-Bossier

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La -

Crews are still out working to restore power throughout the city.  Some of the hardest hit areas are places that have a lot of big trees. Those trees get icy, they start leaning on the power lines and that's where we have all the trouble. Power officials say people have suffered with outages since late last night.

"We feel very fortunate because we have had electricity all through the night when other have not had electricity," said David Bolton. Bolton and his family's electricity went out during the day on Wednesday after the brunt of the storm moved through the area. Their lights came back on within a few hours and he says they were some of the lucky ones. This isn't their first time riding a storm out without power so Bolton offered a few tips. "Just be patient. Don't open the refrigerator door, keep those foods cold and fresh as long as possible."

Scott McCloud with SWEPCO says they have a crew of a thousand people helping to get electricity on for people throughout the Arklatex. "Our peak, what we consider a peak outage, was at midnight last night when we had 47,000 customers without power and that was in East Texas and Northwest Louisiana."

But Shreveport and Northwest Louisiana was hardest hit with sleet and freezing rain. You can see where a power lines just snapped in an area, sending entire neighborhoods into the dark. "We have a lot of trees that are sagging but temperatures are warming up as we go through the day, so we hope to see some of that melting." Mccloud says they're doing everything they can to get the power back on, but in case you're in this situation in the future he also offers a few tips. "You should always have a weather safety kit around your home. Plenty of blankets, fresh batteries and bottled water. Stay away from all of those lines, treat them all like they're hot and just call and report them to us."

Early Wednesday evening, SWEPCO officials offered a timeline for power to be restored throughout the area.

Logansport and Vivian should have power restored by 6pm Wednesday.
Mansfield should see power by 8pm Wednesday.
Bossier City and Haughton should have power 10pm Wednesday.
All of Shreveport should be restored by 10pm Thursday.
