Family, friends remember murder victim Chauncey Broadway while shooter remains at large

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

Friends brought balloons. Family delivered handmade cards. This is a 19th birthday party for Chauncey "Trey" Broadway even though he never lived past 18.

He was killed at a house party on Burlingame Boulevard in Shreveport March 3, 2013, but nobody was ever convicted for the crime.

His father, Chauncey Broadway Sr, lives just around the corner from his son's grave site and says he can't help but pass by the teenager's final resting place.

"[I think of him] every second of every day, but I just keep praying," the elder Broadway said. "That's all I can really do. I've been getting calls. Facebook every two seconds. [The gathering] is something I felt like I had to do, not just for the family but everybody."

Friends and family brought balloons by the dozens and released them into the heavens, his new home.

"He touched a lot of people in a lot of different ways. He had a good heart and everybody could see that from a mile away."

SPD made two arrests in the weeks following Broadway's murder but a Grand Jury failed to indict them. Police say the findings of their investigation remain with the Caddo District Attorney's Office.

About one year ago, KTBS brought you a startling investigation into federal background checks for firearm purchases. Background checks are supposed to weed out felons and mental defectives. But Louisiana had reported zero mental defectives to the FBI's background check system, making us one of the worst states for keeping guns out of the hands of the mentally ill. Because of that, lawmakers passed laws to fix these broken background checks. Until this law went into effect, someone could walk...
