Police: Argument over girl leads to fatal shooting

Posted: Updated:

Police say an apparent argument over a mutual girlfriend has left one Baton Rouge teenager dead and another jailed.

Cpl. Don Coppola says 18-year-old Jamal Variste was arrested in Tuesday's shooting death of 18-year-old Devonta Jenks at a north Baton Rouge apartment complex.

Coppola says Variste, who was booked around 2 a.m. Thursday, faces charges of second degree murder and illegal use of a weapon.

Police found Jenks shot once in the chest in a breezeway at the Spanish Arms Apartments.

He died at the scene.
