DeSoto Parish Jailer arrested accused of inappropriately touching a female inmate

DESOTO PARISH, La. (KTBS) -

A DeSoto Parish Detention Center jailer has been arrested and charged with Malfeasance in Office Sexual Conduct Prohibited with Persons in Custody.

The allegation was reported to the Chief Deputy of Corrections on February 10. During the investigation, 50 year-old Robert Smith, was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. As a result, Smith was fired on February 13 and arrested on the offense. 

Smith had been employed with the DeSoto Parish Sheriff's Office since 2008 as a corrections officer. The basis of the charge involves inappropriate touching. Smith's bond was set at $7,500.00. He has since been released.

The penalty on conviction of this offense carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
