State of Black Shreveport to be held this coming weekend

A group of young future leaders are making plans to attend this weekend's  event, on the state of the city's African American community.

It's a new component of the 3rd annual State of Black Shreveport Symposium. 

The Youth Leadership Program is a friendly competition that gives students a chance to earn scholarships.

As part of the competition, students are asked to develop their own business plans to present to a panel of judges for prizes.

Calvery High School junior Andre Ealy says he's hopeful about his project.

Students from Booker t. Washington High Green Oaks Byrd Calvary and Northwood are competing.

There are several act ivities lined up for the weekend leading up to the big event Saturday from 9 until 3. The event is free to the public.

Dozens of African American business leaders are preparing to meet this weekend to talk about the state of the City's African American community.

It's for the 3rd annual State of Black Shreveport symposium. The event is scheduled to kick off this weekend in downtown Shreveport.  Organizers held a news conference Tuesday morning at the Shreveport Convention Center to announce the event. 


The meeting will focus on  bettering business opportunities for entrepreneurs.
There will also be panel discussions on topic ranging from education, politics and religion.

"As we touch people in the community, more people are becoming aware of what we are doing. This event is becoming a staple in the City of Shreveport," said organizer Lynn Cawthorne.  

The luncheon is this Friday from 1p.m. until 3 p.m.Followed by a day of discussions Saturday, February 22nd  starting at 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The event itself is free to the public. Saturday night, the organization will hold a "Party with a Purpose" event, at 701 Kings Highway, to raise fund for their scholarship program.

On Saturday, leaders from Shreveport's African American and Business Communities will gather at the city's convention center.

It's for the third annual State of Black Shreveport Symposium. Leaders will discuss issues, as well as achievements within the African American community. The symposium will provide educational tips for all people interested in doing business in Shreveport.

Leaders also plan to make discussing issues easier. The meeting will take place on Saturday, February 22 from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Shreveport Convention Center.
