Rep. Jeff Thompson introduces bill to ban cell phones in school zones

Posted: Updated:
BOSSIER CITY, La. -

Louisiana Rep. Jeff Thompson (R-Bossier City) introduced legislation Tuesday that would ban cell phone use for drivers in active school zones.

"When you put a several thousand pound vehicle and a small child together the outcome is not worth the risk," Thompson said. "I don't want this law to be named after a child that had to lose their life before we took action."

If enacted, House Bill 370 would ban "drivers from using certain cellular devices while traveling through school zones during effective hours."

Thompson admits some people are against complete cell phone bans behind the wheel, but he says his bill is specific enough that he doesn't expect resistance.

Bossier Police say they see distracted drivers in school zones on a daily basis.

"Certainly anything that can be done to make our school zones safer is welcome, but it is something that our officers see daily when they're running radar in school zones."

Thompson says he wrote the bill after KTBS 3 News contacted him in August about the safety concerns.
