Baby Backovers: Preventing Tragic Accidents

Posted: Updated:

One second a child may be playing in the house and the next they're lying dead in the driveway.

Experts say backover accidents are a very real threat and can happen right outside your home.

This week, three-year-old Coriyona Ware, of Minden was killed after a friend of her mother accidentally backed over her in the driveway.

The Federal Department of Transportation estimates that each week an average of 50 children are injured, two fatally, by backover crashes.
44-percent of those killed are children under the age of five.

"You need to teach your child that a car is something to stay away from, back up from it and to realize it's dangerous," said Donna Cavanaugh of Shreveport's "Think First."

Cavanaugh says just like you teach your children not to touch a hot stove, teach them to stay away from a vehicle.

Experts also say try to keep toys and bicycles out of driveways which can help alleviate a child's desire to run out of the house.

"Personally one of the habits that's good to remember, is to have them in front of the vehicle standing there with an adult who can keep a hand on them, " said Caddo Parish Lt. Sergeant Michael Gray.

It's also important to remember that having a camera on your car is not a fool proof way to keep tragic accidents from happening.  Although they can help, experts say they can provide a false sense of security.

"Backup cameras are a good thing. They reduce a lot of accidents, but you cannot rely on a gadget to solve everybody's problem. Can't rely on legislation. If you have small kids you just have to be vigilant and careful at all times. Because so many of the cases that we've worked at the Sheriff's office, the child was under the side of the vehicle and the backup camera would not have necessarily changed the outcome of the cases. It's not a fix-all," said Gray.
