BOSSIER PARISH, La. (KTBS) -

The Bossier Parish Police Jury says goodbye to one of its own, as he moves on to the next chapter in his life.

Former Director of Public Safety Sammy Halphen, who's taking a job in the private sector, was recognized at the Police Jury's Wednesday meeting.

He was presented a plaque and resolution in appreciation for all his years of service to the parish.

"He's a gem to the parish. He's just been a real plus. We hate to see him go, we hate to lose him but I know it's a great opportunity for him and he's been very well appreciated," says BPPJ President Doug Rimmer.

Halphen served as Fire Chief in Bossier City, before becoming Director of Public Safety for the parish.

Also at the meeting, the BPPJ put irs support behind legislation to levy a tax on local hotel and motel rooms.

The Jury passed a resolution Wednesday in support of a bill that would allow for a local option election in Caddo and Bossier Parishes.

If approved in that election, there would be up to a 2.5% additional tax on booked rooms.

The revenue generated would go to support entities like the Shreveport Regional Airport, the Independence Bowl, and the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission.

"All these entities were looking to try to get something last year but were unsuccessful so it put us in jeopardy, particularly the Sports Commission. There's such competition for these big events and it's such an economic boom to our area when we get these thousands of spectators in," says Rimmer.

The bill will go before the legislature during this session.

We've been told by many veterans that they receive quality care at the V.A. hospital in Shreveport. But for some getting an appointment to see their caregivers is the challenge. According to our V.A., they do not have a problem getting patients seen quickly - and the numbers they report echo that conclusion.
