Three dogs euthanized before being rescued in Vermillion Parish

VERMILLION PARISH (KATC) -

The euthanization of three dogs in Vermilion Parish has sparked an online petition demanding answers as to why the dogs were killed.

In just a few days, the petition has more than three thousand signatures. Workers with a rescue agency out of Ascension Parish said they were in contact with animal control, but the dogs were killed just hours before they arrived to save them.

Now just a picture is all that's left of Ringo, Sasha, and Pepper.

"It's heart-breaking, it's devastating because they had a chance at life, and now they have nothing. That's just pure evil in my opinion," said Treva Jeffers, treasurer of Companion Animal Rescue of Ascension, also known as C.A.R.A.

Rescue efforts began with emails sent last Wednesday between C.A.R.A and Vermilion Parish Rabies Animal Control. C.A.R.A. says they agreed to pick up the dogs the next day and says Sasha even had a home waiting for her.

In the email, Vermilion officials said the dogs could be picked up at 8:00 Thursday morning. However, C.A.R.A said they told animal control officials they wouldn't be able to get there until closer to noon. But by then, it was too late.

"It's absolutely most devastating because we don't do this, it's not a hobby. It's not for fun, we do this for the better interest of these animals," Jeffers said.

KATC tried reaching out to Vermilion Parish Rabies Animal Control about the situation, but they said they have no comment.

However, an attorney for the parish police jury gave a statement. Paul Moresi referred to the C.A.R.A and said, "When they did not appear several hours later to pick up the animals, the animals were euthanized in accordance with parish ordinance and a standing order which prohibits over-crowding."

Rescue groups are encouraging residents to attend this week's police jury meeting where they hope the issue will be addressed publicly.

KATC has reached out to Vermilion Parish Rabies Animal Control for specifics on how many dogs are euthanized, and what the policy is when choosing which animals will be killed. However, that information was not available by news time.
