Caddo Parish School Board 'one board one voice'

Posted: Updated:

A new proposed communication policy is up for a vote among Caddo Parish School Board members.

It is a plan to refer all elected members to limit public comments to the media.
Some board members say the vote would be in an effort to move forward to a unified board with one voice. However not all members are on board with the plan.

The Caddo Parish School Board is moving forward with establishing a district communication policy for school board members when dealing with the public.

Board members Charlotte Crawley and Curtis Hooks are among the minority of members, who feel like the group has a motive.

"They do not want the media to know what is going on.  They are trying to shut the news media out. That is their exact reason," said Hooks, District 5.

School Board President Carl Pierson, Sr.  says that there are no real consequences in place, if board members violate the policy. He says the measure is to prevent board members
from portraying a negative image to the public, which would be considered detrimental to the school board as a whole.

"What it does it try to make us look a little bit more professional.   A little bit more aware of  how we address the public," said Pierson, Sr..

If the measure is passed,  Superintendent Dr. Lamar Goree, the communications department and school board president will be the designated spokesperson or spokespersons for the school system.

"It only takes 7 votes to get this passed. Whatever the board decides the board decides.  This is in no way trying to sensor the board members from expressing themselves," said Pierson, Sr.

They can have 12 votes to approve it but I'm going to still speak out. I am not going to let this stop me.," said Hooks.

Board members are expected to vote on the issue during their school board meeting.
The meeting has been moved from it's scheduled time of every other Tuesday, to Monday, March 17th.
