SPD urges citizens to report suspicious behavior following Weinstock murders

SHREVEPORT, La. -

Johnny Randolph didn't know what to think when he pulled up to patrol cars and police tape in front of his Weinstock St. home March 7.

"When I first drove up, I'm thinking something happened with my family," Randolph said. "I was so disturbed by seeing all the police cars and everything. I was in shock finding out something happened next door."

Police found two dead bodies belonging to Nikko Taylor, 22, and Rajean George, 16, inside the Allendale home. Investigators say both were shot once in the upper body.

Of the dozen or so neighbors who walked by the crime scene that night, several said they had heard gunshots in the 24 hours before police pulled up.

The problem for police is that those residents never called 911. SPD officials say they rely on tips from the community.

"It's paramount," SPD's Marcus Hines said. "You have a thousand pairs of eyes and ears in the community that you simply don't have inside the police department so that information is vital."

One week later, Weinstock St. is quiet again. Only scraps remain of the police tape.

Police responded to 325 calls about the most serious violent offenses between January and September 2013, according to the latest data available.

Although residents say gunshots are so common they don't call them in, this district had the third lowest crime rate in the city during that data period.

"It takes two seconds to call in that information, and that could make the difference between life or death or either catching or not catching a suspect. So when we hear these people say, 'Hey, I heard the shots. I didn't think to call,' That's very frustrating."
