First Baptist Church School Reaches for the Stars

Posted: Updated:

Nearly 240 students in grades Kindergarten through Fifth at First Baptist Church School will participate in a space-themed Curriculum Fair on its Shreveport campus from 8:30 AM – 2:30 today. Sci-port Discovery Center and Barksdale Airforce Base will facilitate numerous demonstrations and hands-on activities throughout the day.

In the afternoon, Sci-port staff members will present "Space Journey Carnival," it's interactive space display and activities for each class, while Barksdale's "Starbase Louisiana" will administer the launching of student-created model rockets. (Students in 3rd through 5th grades have constructed the rockets in class)

Students will enjoy other space-related experiences throughout the day. For example, students will take turns playing in the "Moon Bounce" (space inflatable) while also being treated to a special snack of "rocket pops." Also, the regularly-scheduled, weekly chapel lesson will focus on Genesis 1:1, "God created the Heavens and the Earth."

A first-time event for First Baptist Church School, the curriculum fair is meant to expose students to a particular educational topic in a fun and interactive way. Presenting themes school-wide in this manner is a best practice in education. This curriculum fair was coordinated by First Baptist's Elementary Curriculum Coordinator, Jessica Burford.
