Arkansas lottery looks at allowing debit cards

Posted: Updated:

To buy an Arkansas lottery ticket, players must use cash.

But with sales lagging, the Arkansas Lottery Commission voted Wednesday to let agency director Bishop Woosley take a look at allowing customers to use debit cards for purchases.

Woosley says allowing the cards would likely improve sales, and he says most other state lotteries allow debit card purchases.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports that the change would likely require the General Assembly to amend the state lottery law. Woosley said the next step would be to approach the Legislature so the change could be addressed in the 2015 session.

Some retailers have complained that debit card fees would cut into the thin margin that stores receive from sales. Woosley says he can find a way to make the change work.
