Sex crime victim speaks out

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTBS) -

Over the weekend, shreveport police arrested a man for aggravated rape and police believe there may be more victims who haven't come forward.

The man, is 62 year old Jimmy Carthren of Shreveport. Investigators say over the span of 2 decades Carthren sexually assaulted at least 4 victims. One of his accusers spoke exclusively to KTBS 3's Keristen Holmes. It's a sad story where this brave young woman  says she now wants her misery to become her ministry and encourages others to speak out about an issue that could haunt its victims for the rest of their lives.

It's child molestation.

To protect her identity we won't tell you her name but she will tell you her story.

"I felt lonely, I felt like I was abandoned, I felt unloved. I felt all type of ways because I felt like nobody cared about it." This young woman says as a child, nearly 15 years ago, she was molested by Jimmy Carthren. Carthren was a family friend who would often baby sit her. She says Carthren would tell her that they were 'playing.' "That's exactly what he called it, 'play' and it went on for years, almost 7 plus years. And I didn't want to tell because I thought I'd get in trouble for it. Every time I see him, I'd get angry like, 'ugh, I hate him' because I knew exactly the things he's done to me."

Saturday afternoon, Shreveport police arrested Carthren on 4 counts of aggravated rape for every alleged victim who's come forward in their investigation. This  woman says she wishes she'd said something sooner. "I could have spoke out, I could have been said something, I could have told everybody about it and that way we could have stopped the cycle a long time ago. I wish that every little girl that he's ever touched, even if you're a grown woman now, speak out and say something."

Now that Carthren is behind bars, she says she feels that justice is being served. "I feel relieved. I can actually laugh and smile now. I feel like I can move on with life and not hold on to something. It was like a dark place for me. I thank God for actually bringing me through because if it wasn't for him, I don't know where I'd be right now."

Carthren's accusers are pleading to any others with similar stories to come forward,  to call police and tell them their stories.
This victim also says, even if you don't know Carthren, but have been victimized in this way, tell someone because your story could help protect others.

Sexual assault is one of the most under-reported crimes with an average of only 39% being reported to the police each year.

When victims of rape, attempted rape and sexual assault did not report the crime, the most often cited reasons were:
Personal matters with 23%.
Fear of reprisal with 16%.
And police bias with 6%.

Carthren is now being held in the Caddo Correctional Center. HIS BAIL IS $600,000 DOLLARS.

The investigation is ongoing.

We've been told by many veterans that they receive quality care at the V.A. hospital in Shreveport. But for some getting an appointment to see their caregivers is the challenge. According to our V.A., they do not have a problem getting patients seen quickly - and the numbers they report echo that conclusion. We’ve uncovered concerns, however, over how their numbers look so good - while patients are still waiting to be seen.“Certainly from my viewpoint here, as a veteran, as a physician, the c...

Ever since allegations that veterans died waiting for care came out of phoenix, we've all been asking, why, and how could an organization aimed at helping our servicemen and women foster an atmosphere where this has gone on for so long?
