Sparring with SPAR

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La -

Shreveport's Battle on the Border has big plans for the 4th installment of the football classic. The Shreveport Park and Recreation sponsored city event is expanding to 7 games over 3 days. One of the highlights of the already released schedule was a Thursday night "Bachman Bowl" between Calvary head coach John Bachman against his son Thomas' team, Bastrop.

But with 6 months to go, there's another battle brewing. The 14 team line-up has gotten a shake-up, and Bachman says he's part of the problem. According to Bachman, Bastrop can no longer play the Cavs on Thursday because their administration doesn't want them traveling on mid-week school night.

Bachman has needed Calvary to play on Thursday because they face Byrd on the next Thursday after playing Parkway the previous Thursday. Because Bachman feels like he caused the problem, Calvary found a replacement in 3-time reigning TAAPS state champion Midland Christian.

Calvary went on to propose the change to SPAR, but has not heard back from the organization in over 2 weeks, except that "legal" has taken over the scheduling matter.  Because no one at Calvary has been able to speak with SPAR officials, the "legal" may refer to the contract Bachman says Battle on the Border teams sign that states if you back out of the line-up, there's a $25,000 penalty.

I spoke to SPAR's Assistant Director Patrick Wesley who would not agree to an interview, saying only they have no comment at this time.  Repeated follow-up calls to SPAR were not returned.

Calvary says they're not looking for special treatment but they have been involved with Battle on the Border every year since it began. Bachman adds he's not thinking of backing out because he says he's always agreed to play on Thursday only.

Bachman believes they've found the perfect solution in a Midland Christian Thursday night game, especially with all of the economic benefits the Texas team would bring to the city of Shreveport. But without SPAR's approval, the location of this game is still up in the air. Bachman just wants an answer from SPAR so they can move forward.

Mississippi State may have their most complete team yet under Dan Mullen with 30 returning starters. Experience can be invaluable in the SEC, especially when it comes to the position of quarterback. And that's why Mississippi State has all the confidence in the world in Haughton native, Dak Prescott.
