The Louisiana Foreign Language Teachers'Association in town

Posted: Updated:

Como se dice estoy estudiando Espanola en ingles. How do you say I'm studying my Spanish in English? That is the goal of several educators in town for this weekend's event.

Educators that promote the skill of learning a foreign language such as  french and Spanish are in town for their annual conference.

"I  feel excited. It's a great opportunity for foreign language teachers from across Louisiana to get together.   It is a conference that we hold once a year and this is in fact our first time in Shreveport," said
Scott Harris,  president of LFLTA.
Some educators say being fluent in a foreign language boosts  student performance scores in Common CORE state standards, because it  focuses on stronger reading and writing skills.
"Foreign language is important because it really instills better reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills which helps with English.  Knowing another language really helps you know your own," said  Jordan Aillet,  French teacher, C. E. Byrd High School.
The two day event will include interactive workshops that educators can take back to share in their classrooms.
Parkway High  Spanish  teacher,   Silvania Allen  of Lima,  Peru is one of the finalist for the teacher of the year award.

"I teach my students a technique where the students listen to a story and they draw the story. They listen to the story totally and completely in Spanish," said Allen.

The finalists for the title are nominated by their peers. The recipient of the teacher of the year award will go onto to represent the state during the national program in Memphis, Tennessee.

A group of Spanish teachers in Bossier schools are doing their part to encourage students to participate in the arts.

Bossier students can sing and dance for the Spanish Idol, coming up on April 3, 2014.
This year's event will take place at Airline High School  6 p.m.
Tickets are $5,00.
