Recent drought conditions being blamed for decrease in Wild Turkey Population

Posted: Updated:

After drought years during 2011 and 2012, a decrease in the population of turkeys occurred. Plus a loss of natural habitat. After a well thought restocking program the numbers of these wild birds has risen.

One volunteer stated "The birds have been here in the past.  So, there is something that we did as humans, or something that happened, that made these birds not be there anymore.  So I think it is important to keep it as natural as possible and restore it back to what it once was."

A Texas wildlife specialist says "We have spent the last 10 years intensively managing the habitat, here on this WMA, specifically targeted for wild turkeys.  Looking forward to the day when we would release turkeys here again.  It is a pretty exciting, rewarding day."

Time will tell if these Tennessee turkeys, take to Texas.

Meanwhile northwest Louisiana game management biologist Jeff Johnson talks about our situation in the Bayou State.

"Now we have basically the majority of our turkey habitat fully stocked"

And the efforts have really paid off since the end of the recent drought years. There was adequate rain in 2013.

Johnson adds "Thankfully starting last year when we got out of that drought cycle we had better reproduction. Actually northwest Louisiana had the highest reproduction in the state"
