Bob Griffin: Griffin's Good Life Jan Hughest

Posted: Updated:

She's been a teacher at Eden Gardens Elementary for over thirty years. In fact she helped the school become earn a blue ribbon..and even though she's past retirement age she's still living the good life.

Since 1982, after taking a 14 year break from the field of education to be a stay at home mom, Jan Hughes, has been at Eden Gardens.

First as a teacher, then the counselor, at which time, she was named principal. As for her wanting to become an educator it surfaced when she was grade school.

"I guess the reward of being a sixth or seventh grader was you got to be a recess helper and a classroom helper," she said,  "So I started out working with first graders and the joy I felt getting to do that every day led to me becoming a teacher..."

With students from kindergarten though the fifth grade Hughes is proud of the diversity of the children.

"We're kind of a melting pot. We have all type children from all different countries, different faiths, and we've learned to go be friends , we learn to work in groups,"

With her love of what she does, how long will she continue?

"I know that at some point I will have to leave but as long as I'm contributing, as long as the children hug me in the morning and cry the last time they walk out the building as a fifth grader, I'm going to keep on doing what I'm doing. I love it."

Jan Hughes, living the good life as an educator, has touched the lives of thousands of youngsters and she's looking forward to more of the same.

The Military's search for one little boy ends in Shreveport.  Serious men with a serious mission, and a seriously great sense of humor. Airmen and soldiers serving in Afghanistan found laughter in difficult times, all courtesy of 4 little words in a letter from a school child – “Hope you make it. – Gavin” The troops wanted to meet the young man who inspired them so much.  We bring you that special meeting.
