Ted Cruz heads to Liberty U to woo evangelicals

Posted: Updated:

Sen. Ted Cruz is making a pilgrimage to one of the largest weekly meetings of young evangelicals in the country.

The Texas Republican scheduled a Wednesday appearance before the student body of Liberty University, the Virginia school founded by the late Rev. Jerry Falwell. The campus is a favorite stop for potential White House contenders to build buzz among a bloc of Republican voters who have great sway in picking their next nominee.

The trip also signals respect for the Christian university and its formidable alumni network.

Cruz, who is considering a White House run, is following his father to Liberty's campus. The Rev. Rafael Cruz, a pastor in the Dallas suburbs, spoke to the same event last year.
