Newly renovated municipal auditorium to be revealed Thursday afternoon

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTBS) -

The newly renovated Shreveport Municipal Auditorium will open its doors Thursday. It will be the first time the public will get to see the newly remodeled historic building.

The renovation is possible because of a 2011 bond issue which set aside $4.3 million. That figure increased to $5.3 million with help from state historic rehabilitation tax credits.

The extra cash allowed for more projects to be completed, including the replacement of the upper level seating and the replacement of some windows. It also funded cosmetic repairs throughout the building.

"We refurbished the dressing rooms to make them ADA compliant," said Annie McDearmont, the remodel's project manager. "We also made a star dressing room, a green room, to make it more comfortable for promoters and customers that come into the building."

The auditorium is the birthplace of the Louisiana Hayride and country music in the south. Elvis Presley made appearances here.

With the renovation of this national landmark, project managers hope bring that life back into the building. It's a trend that spreads through out the Shreveport's downtown.

"If we as people can reinvent ourselves, why can't old buildings reinvent themselves for the future? And that's what we're seeing downtown," said Liz Swaine with the Downtown Development Authority. "We've got these great old buildings that started as offices and maybe retail. Now they're becoming residential. Or maybe they're going from office to retail."

The public party kicks off today at 4:30 and last until 7:30pm. The event is free and includes building tours, door prizes and auditorium appetizers.
