Mold issue at Downtown Library

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La -

There's a growing problem inside of Shreve memorial library downtown. Mold. It's attacking the books and archival material. Here in shreveport, the weather is always changing but one constant that we deal with regularly is the humidity. It gives us a bad hair day or two but library officials say, that moisture is also threatening their most valuable resources like books.

Ivy Woodard-Latin works for Shreve Memorial Library. "The books we have tagged in the yellow here, you can see some of the mold is really starting to show on some of these books. Anywhere that you've got a lot of paper and books and bindings, if there's any moisture to be had, it will attach itself."

Latin says to protect books, the rooms humidity levels should stay around 40 percent. But on any given day on the third floor of this branch, humidity levels reach 60 to 70 percent giving mold a chance to grow on things like books and microfilm, where libraries archive old newspapers. "If you're looking for something that happened, even your birth announcement, you can most likely found that on microfilm and of course we want to have that available for people when they come to do their research."

Moldremediation.com says it can cost anywhere between $500 and upwards of $30,000 to tackle mold depending on the severity of the case. Dustin Slad visits the library regularly. "The books in general are just things we want to take care of because although you can find any and everything online it's still nice to have a hard copy. It's a really historic building, it'd kind of be a shame if they didn't keep up the oldest one."

The mold issue is concentrated on the third floor of the library. Officials have allotted $10,000 to combat the problem. They're putting the funds in their budget as a cost estimate. The main library branch is just over a hundred years old. Officials are shopping around for mold removal companies to fix the problem. Shreve Memorial Library system is funded in part with local tax dollars.
