A. C. Steere celebrates big win

Posted: Updated:
CADDO PARISH, La. (KTBS) -

A Caddo school has bragging rights for it's triple win. The elementary school in Shreveport's Broadmoor neighborhood is home to the district's elementary student, teacher and principal of the year.

In a district that has a number of academically struggling schools, What's right about A. C. Steere Elementary school?

The district's outstanding educators and student; fifth grader Tindol Hamm-where all honored during a recent Caddo Parish School Board meeting.

The school received an "A" letter grade through the Louisiana Department of Education.

"What a unique situation to have them all come from one school, so I offer my sincere congratulations to the A.C. Steere family for that remarkable accomplishment," Dr. Lamar Goree.

A.C. Steere Principal Kim Derrick says the positive spotlight on her school is a dream come true.

"It feels great. It is such an honor. I say every time we have a school gathering, that our students and the teachers make the school so great. I really do feel like being in education is not my job it's my passion," said Derrick.

The trifecta win for the school is in contrast to a deal struck with the Recovery School District in December, to makeover several failing schools rather than lose them to state takeover, that would save Fair Park High, Woodlawn high, as well as Midway and Atkins Elementary schools. All schools on the district's academically unacceptable list.

"We cannot compare the success of one of our schools in the district to others such as Atkins because each one of our schools have unique challenges," said Dr. Lamar Goree.

Top student fifth grader Tindol Hamm, 10, who was awarded with the title of student of the year, says her great work ethic was they key to her success.

"Definitely having a good attitude and being able to work with other people and listening and following directions," said Hamm.

The school's teacher of the year, Glynis Johnston teaches third grade. "One of her many creative methods of engaging her students, was to transform her classroom into a Starbucks Coffee cafe," said Johnston.

"The pathway that will make the children successful whether it is through research the arts dance anything I can implement into my classroom to show their pathway for success," said Johnston.

Principal Derrick attributes hard work, patience and kindness to her wins however she says it is really the people that she works with that make the school such a success.
