K9 Officer laid to rest

Posted: Updated:
TEXARKANA, Ark. -

While the bond between a dog and his owner is strong, the bond between a K-9 handler and his working partner can be even stronger.

They work and live together 24 hours a day, dealing with both the routine to the most dangerous assignments.

A memorial was held Monday morning to honor the passing of a K-9 officer with the Texarkana, Arkansas Police Department.

K-9 Officer Zorg received full police honors as his body was laid to rest at East Memorial Gardens.

"They really become a part of the family, it's like losing a family member," said Officer Jeff Savage, Zorg's handler.

Zorg passed away last week from natural causes.

The German Shepherd was assigned a patrol K-9 in October 2005.

Police say the K-9 proved to be a great asset to the community by tracking suspects, clearing buildings, and conducting article searches.

Zorg was also responsible for assisting Officer Savage in the seizure of $220,000 worth of marijuana at the local Greyhound bus station.

The 10-year old K9 lived with the Savage family Jeff, Meta, Lexi and Amber until his passing.

While the entire department is saddened by the loss, it's those who knew him best that grieve the most.

The family says Zorg will be greatly missed.

"He was a protector to all of us," explained Amber Savage.

Zorg was 2 years old when he came to live with the family.

"I didn't even think he would bite people, I had to see him train," said Meta Savage. "He was so gentle and sweet to our family."

"He was so different at home. He was really very sweet," said Lexi Savage.

Zorg had retired from the department in 2012 due to medical issues.

He passed away on March 30, 2014.
