Saunders hopes to make NFL say, "Oh, you?"

Posted: Updated:
Norman, Ok -

Inanother of our KTBS 3 sports profiles of area players heading to the NFL draftwe meet Oklahoma wide receiver Jalen Saunders, who has quickness and good bloodlines.Saunders is the nephew of 13-year nfl wide receiver Webster Slaughter and nowpart of a very deep and very fast wide receiver class.  Saunders has shown 4.4 speed, but being just5-8-1/2 is considered undersized by the NFL.

"Everyone is going to look at me because of my size," saysSaunders. "People are going to say I'm small.. I know I'm small, but I playbig."

Saunders has grown his hair on top a few inches, which makeshim "look" taller and makes him look a little like former teammate KennyStills, now with the New Orleans Saints. In all seriousness, Saunders saw howStills took advantage of his opportunities in New Orleans and hopes he gets thechance to do the same wherever he gets taken.  Saunders says it means a lot to him to seewhat Stills could do. "To think, last year we were on the same team, then thenext year he's making plays for Drew Brees," Saunders said with a big smile. "Itwas real exciting to watch."

Saunders has already proven he can make plays on differentteams and in different systems.  He cameto Oklahoma as a transfer from Fresno State. Saunders says the competition in the Big 12 and the WAC was not comparable. He says it was a big jumpfor him but adds, "I proved a lot of people wrong."

Saunders is going to have to prove people wrong again.  Scouts know what he can do in open space, butare worried his size will keep him from getting there in the NFL.

"Physically, that's what God put on you.  You can't change that."  Saunders says he's just going to work gettingtoward getting bigger, but the most important thing is being mentally tough.

For Saunders, being mentally tough is not the question..It's being physically capable, something he's prepared to prove no matter wherehe goes or how he gets there.
