Mexican national set to die for 1997 Texas slaying

Posted: Updated:

A Mexican citizen convicted of fatally beating a former Baylor University professor and attacking his wife at their ranch near Kerrville is headed to the Texas death chamber.

Ramiro Hernandez-Llanas would be the sixth Texas prisoner executed this year.

The 44-year-old was a convicted murderer who had escaped from a Mexican prison and was in the U.S. illegally when he was arrested for the 1997 slaying of 49-year-old Glen Lich. Lich had given him a construction job.

Hernandez-Llanas' appeals were exhausted, and the Texas parole board refused to commute his prison sentence to life.

His lethal injection Wednesday would be the second in a week with a new supply of pentobarbital. The U.S. Supreme Court has upheld Texas prison officials' decision to withhold the identity of the new drug provider.
