Proposed federal fee could ground flights at Shreveport Downtown Airport

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTBS) -

The Shreveport Downtown Airport is the largest general aviation airport in the region, but a proposed federal fee could put it in jeopardy.

Last month, President Obama proposed a $100 per flight fee on every take-off and landing by general aviation and commercial aircraft as part of his 2015 budget.

That's an extra $200 each time a plane takes off.

The federal government would make a lot of money from the Downtown Airport. More than 320 airplanes are based there, and the flights they make are vital to the area's economy.

"People can fly in and do business at the airport or its proximity to downtown allows people to do business quickly," said airport director Stacy Kuba. ‘[They can] get back to their planes and get back on their planes and go on with their business."

The Alliance for Aviation Across America issued the following statement in response to the proposed fee:

"It is disappointing that once again, in spite of widespread, bipartisan opposition from businesses, farms, Mayors and communities around the nation, the Administration included a harmful user fee in the proposed budget for 2015. The existing fuel tax is simple, efficient and easy-to-use, whereas a user fee would decimate businesses and operators with unnecessary bureaucracy. Our leaders should be doing everything possible to support this vital industry and lifeline to communities around the nation."

The aviation group said in a press release, "General aviation supports 1.2 million American jobs, represents $150 billion of economic activity each year, and is a vital asset to businesses of all sizes, farms and charitable groups across the country."

According to an article on forbes.com, President Obama has included this $100 per flight fee in each of his past four spending plans, and the House of Representatives continues to strike it down.

If the fee does make it into the budget, flight operators will have to start paying it October 1, 2014.
