BOSSIER PARISH, La. -

Bossier Sheriff Julian Whittington says a former daycare director for a Benton church has been arrested for stealing thousands of dollars from the daycare accounts and placing into her personal accounts, following an investigation by the Bossier Financial Crimes Task Force.

Karen B. Johnson, 46, of the 1500 block of Linton Road in Benton, was arrested Monday on felony theft, false accounting, unauthorized use of an access card and 35 counts of forgery while serving as the director of the Benton United Methodist Daycare.

Detectives discovered evidence that Johnson, who had been the director of the daycare for the past four years, forged nearly three dozen checks and made multiple deposits in excess of $17,000 of daycare money into her personal finance accounts from January 2013 through January 2014. Detectives also charged Johnson with using a church daycare credit card for personal purchases.

Investigators believe Johnson acted alone without any knowledge of church or daycare staff members. She was immediately released from employment from the daycare when the investigation began in mid-January 2014.

Johnson was transported to the Bossier Maximum Security Facility for booking with a bond of $12,500.

We've been told by many veterans that they receive quality care at the V.A. hospital in Shreveport. But for some getting an appointment to see their caregivers is the challenge. According to our V.A., they do not have a problem getting patients seen quickly - and the numbers they report echo that conclusion. We’ve uncovered concerns, however, over how their numbers look so good - while patients are still waiting to be seen.“Certainly from my viewpoint here, as a veteran, as a physician, the c...
