Tennis anyone? Loyola's Boyd signs scholarship

SHREVEPORT, La -

From Loyola Prep: Loyola's Charlton Boyd has become the first Flyer to receive a Division I tennis scholarship in more than 10 years signing with Wagner College (N.Y.) Wednesday in ceremonies at the school.

Boyd has been a state champion in both singles (2013) and doubles (2011) for the Flyers and will be looking to earn a second singles state title this year in the Division II competition.

Boyd is currently ranked No. 7 in the Louisiana in the boys 18s and is ranked No. 131 in the South.

"Charley has been an outstanding player for us in both singles and doubles during his career at Loyola." Loyola coach Mike Mawhinney. "I know he will continue to be a strong player at the next level."

Boyd is a three-time member of the Flyers' state championship teams and has twice been named to the All-State team. He has also represented Louisiana in the Southern Cup in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2013.

Located in Staten Island, N.Y., Wagner competes in the Northeast Conference.

Boyd is the son of Drs. Carter and Bernadette Boyd and won the 2011 doubles championship with his brother Carter. He is a Wendy's High School Heisman finalist for Louisiana.

At Loyola, he has been involved in SGA, Key Club, Flyers for Life, Spanish Club, Ambassadors, Art Club and National Honor Society.
