SPORTRAN Future - KTBS.com - Shreveport, LA News, Weather and Sports

How do you plan to get to work or run your errands today?  For most of us it's a car.  And, for many of us a car is one of our biggest expenses.  Gas, insurance, repairs.   But you've got no choice, right?  Shreveport/Bossier's bus service, SPORTRAN, is trying to change that.   Some big changes on the way that might have you thinking about taking the bus in the future.

We've all seen the big busses around Shreveport and Bossier City, and we know what they do.... take people from point 'A' to point 'B'.  But, like with most things, there are ways to do it better, faster and more efficiently.

SPORTRAN has gotten together with an outside agency to put every aspect of it's service under a microscope.  It's called the Transit Development Study, and everything is up for debate and discussion.

"The Transit Development Study will encompass all the new routes for the new terminal.  And, this is going to be a positive thing because some of the routes that we've had service in for a long time where ridership may have decreased, we'll be able to move those hours and services to different areas", said Dinero Washington General Manager of SPORTRAN.

"We look at the Youree drive corridor, is that something we should increase service in that area.  We look at the airline corridor should we increase more service in that area.  So that's some of the things we're looking at to be more beneficial."

The results and changes from the transit development study won't be evident until 2015 when the main terminal is moved from Crocket street to the Murphy/Texas street location.

But, you don't have to wait until 2015 to see important changes at SPORTRAN

"We just issued a purchase order to purchase new "where's my bus software" and passenger count software.  This will tell us in real time where's the bus, how is the bus performing, is the bus running late."

So they will be able to track the busses second by second, but even better than that.... you will be able to track the busses.

"Our passengers will have a sportran app on their phone. Where they can click on it and say your next bus will be here in 3 minutes, your next bus will arrive in 30 minutes.  We'll have that same type technology at the terminal.  We'll have display boards something similar to what airports have now."

Smaller busses, trolleys and express routes also being considered right now.
