Mayor Glover pushes medicaid expansion

Posted: Updated:

Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover spoke out in favor of medicaid expansion from the steps of University Health hospital Thursday morning.

Glover had a strong message for Gov. Bobby Jindal asking him to listen to the voice of the people.
Jindal opted out of creating a state insurance exchange plan under the Affordable Care Act, siding with Texas Gov. Rick Perry.
Glover is now offering vocal support for two proposed amendments to the state constitution that would put medicaid expansion on the popular November ballot.

"The good thing about doing this as a constitutional amendment is that it cannot be vetoed by the governor. It would ultimately go to the people of Louisiana to decide," said Glover.

The bills have yet to be voted on in the state legislature. One is sponsored by state senator Ben Nevers (D) and the other by state representative Patricia Smith (D).

Caddo Parish commissioner Stephanie Lynch spoke along with the mayor.
