Michael White named best in state; Tech hopes he stays

Posted: Updated:
RUSTON, La -

There are reports out of Knoxville that the name of Louisiana Tech men's basketball coach Michael White is being mentioned for the vacant job at Tennessee.  Word is the Vols are considering White, Donnie Tyndall of Southern Miss and Wichita State's Gregg Marshall.

On Thursday White was named selected as the recipient of the Tommy Joe Eagles Memorial Award as the Louisiana Major College Coach of the Year for 2014, voted on by the Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches (LABC).The honor is selected annually by the men's college basketball coaches in the State of Louisiana.

White's Bulldogs just completed an impressive 2013-14 season that saw the team post an overall record of 29-8, tying for the most victories ever in a single season in program history.

With the 29 wins came a share of the Conference USA regular season title in the school's first year in the league and a runner-up finish in the C-USA Tournament.

LA Tech also registered wins over Big 12 second place finisher Oklahoma and SEC second place finisher Georgia and was one victory shy of reaching the National Invitation Tournament Final Four.

It marked back-to-back conference titles and back-to-back NIT appearances for the ‘Dogs.

The award is named in honor of former Bulldog head coach Tommy Joe Eagles who was at the helm for four seasons (1985-89) and compiled an 87-40 while leading the team to three conference championships, two NCAA Tournament appearances and two NIT appearances.

The Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches (LABC) was founded on September 18, 1974 when representatives from fourteen Louisiana universities and colleges met in Baton Rouge for the sole purpose of forming an organization to promote basketball on all levels in the State of Louisiana. It was the first state-level organization of its kind in the nation.
