Filipino teacher update

Posted: Updated:
Five years ago group of Filipino teachers were recruited from the Philippines with the promise of teaching jobs in the U.S. and a better life.Since that time, the educators have been working here in Caddo schools and  fighting to stay in the country, but it's a fight that hasn't been easy.

The majority of the red tape has been cut, regarding a group of Filipino teachers, who wanted to make careers out of teaching in the U.S.
Locally, it was discovered that the group had been grossly overcharged immigration fees.
The issue has since been corrected and the teachers reimbursed.

However,  Red River United President, Jackie Lansdale, said the group was stripped of their tenure.
"Anybody else in the United States of America gets to be paid by the number of years of service that they have when they come into your district. That's the last thing that we have to do now," said Lansdale.

Back in 2008, about 40 Filipino teachers were hired to take hard-to-fill math, science, special education and English teaching positions at 25 schools in Caddo Parish.
