Worley Observatory celebrates 50th anniversary

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La -
2014 marks a special anniversary for a special building in Caddo parish. It's a place that both youngsters and adults have enjoyed for decades.
As you  take a drive to southern Caddo parish. An out of the way spot off of highway 175 continues to draw a very an observant society of members.
Dr. Cran Lucas is one of those members and says "The Shreveport Bossier Astronomical Society has been around since 1959. We are a bunch of amateur astronomers we come from all walks of life. Many of us from child hood have grown up interested in space and the universe. These stargazers would gather to search for comets or planets or asteroids. But they had a further vision. The need arose for a building. A home for a giant magnifier pointed toward the sky. Dr. Lucas relates "The Worley Observatory was built in 1964. And this is our 50th year. Our golden anniversary. The adults in the club decided it would be good to actually have a physical facility where the kids and public could come to look through large telescopes. So the Worley Observatory was built in a deliberate spot in a rural location away from the bright lights of Shreveport-Bossier which makes the night sky darker and heavens brighter.
The main mechanical telescope is no longer in use. Society members bring telescopes to set up on the grounds of the facility. Efforts well worth the labor for observers. The society is always looking for new members or interested observers. And with the 50th year anniversary coming over the horizon, special events are planned later this year. Dr. Lucas urges people to get involved and says"The astronomy club will in fact have a 50th year golden anniversary celebration at one of our fall star parties. Details on that are still being developed. Some of the 50th anniversary efforts will be about fundraising, to keep this amazing resource for sky watchers, and local school children, viable for another 50 years.
