Celebrate Education week kicks off

Posted: Updated:
The KTBS 3'S Summer Reading Festival and ArtBreak officially kicked off Monday. The reading festival challenges second graders to read during their summer break  "There is no where else in this region where you have that kind of media support to support literacy in this area as it concerns children," said Ivy Woodard-Latin, from Shreve Memorial Library.

Students from more than 100 schools in Northwest Louisiana have the opportunity to check out visual art pieces, literary writings and musical compositions. Librarian, Elaine Laughlin, has been attending the event almost from the very start. "We used to just have library day. We started at Hamel's and LSU-S and all the different locations in town. There are lots of experiences for the children," said Laughlin. Students are getting hands on lessons in the arts, and being encouraged to read.
"The goal of the event is to encourage reading.  We also try to make them life long readers," said Woodard-Latin.
