"Old school" Thomas a hit with today's players at NSU

Posted: Updated:
NATCHITOCHES, La. - Northwestern State head football coach Jay Thomas is entering his second season with the Demons and there's a sense of comfort in Natchitoches.

Thomas has a style of coaching all his own, something he likes to describe as old school, although the players may tell you something different.  Player after player said that Coach Thomas cracks jokes or uses sayings they don’t understand.

Corny jokes aside, the players are quick to listen to the laid back Thomas.

His investment in them is felt throughout the program, and not just in football.  Center Austin Douglas says meeting Coach Thomas was the difference-maker for him in committing to the Demons.

Thomas’ approach works for him as players are still very aware of it being a “business relationship.”  Thomas is the coach and they are the players, but he has found a way to earn and gain respect in a way that embraces and encourages more than a way that creates fear or discomfort.

Thomas and the rest of the Demons exceeded first season expectations, finishing 2013 with an even 6-6 record.  Now with a year under their belts, they believe they have the perfect combination of team chemistry and skill to bring home a conference championship.
