Evangel softball gets ready for state quarterfinals

The Evangel softball team played their final home game Saturday and the Lady Eagles gutted out an extra innings victory to punch their ticket to the state tournament. Trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the 7th, Olivia Sessions' 2 run RBI tied things up and sent the contest into extras. In the 9th inning, Kayla Calhoun became the game's hero with an RBI single that earned the Lady Eagles a return trip to Sulphur.

Last season, Evangel lost to riverside academy in the semifinals in Class 2A. Now, they have a tough quarterfinal draw taking on the Class 3A number 1 seed and rival John Curtis.

"We're taking it one game at a time. I've told them all season long it doesn't matter who we play and it doesn't matter when we play them we've got to beat them anyways," said head coach Meghan Fisher.

"I think we can take them. It's just another team. We have to beat them to win state anyways. I think we can take them. We have the team, we just have to play to the best of our ability," added pitcher Carolina Sanchez.

State tournament action starts in Sulphur on Friday. Benton and North DeSoto are still alive in Class 4A and play each other in the quarterfinals. Other teams still fighting for a title are Many and Calvary in 2A, and Castor in Class B.
