Governor hopefuls vow focus on schools after Perry

Posted: Updated:
As Gov. Rick Perry wraps up a record 14 years on the job, the two candidates vying to replace him are vowing to make schools a priority after he leaves office.

Republican Greg Abbott and Democrat Wendy Davis have both made education the centerpiece of their gubernatorial campaigns. Following through could elevate education as a signature issue in the Texas governor's office as it was under George W. Bush.

Education observers say whatever happens when Perry leaves in January, they're happy to see schools emerge as the dominant issue in the race.

Perry will leave office with a legacy centered more on creating jobs and economic growth than schools. Spokeswoman Lucy Nashed defends Perry's record on education and says more minority students are ready for college than a decade ago.
